The artificial nesting habitat, a floating raft named ‘the Maid of Sterna Stuff’, was initially built in 2008 with funding from GlaxoSmithKline and NatureScot. The raft underwent extensive renovation in 2018 funded by Angus Environmental Trust, and with support from local volunteers. In 2025 Angus Council contributed additional funds towards a new tern raft which will be built in 2026.

Located on a channel within the intertidal mudflats, the raft provides a safe nesting site for common terns with estimates of over 100 chicks in the 2024 breeding season. The raft is best viewed from Scottish Wildlife Trust Montrose Basin Visitor Centre.
