Volunteer with SmartRivers
SmartRivers is a scientifically robust citizen science toolkit. Aquatic invertebrates can tell us a lot about the health and condition of our waterways; they can be an indicator of nutrient enrichment or low oxygen content. This information can therefore be used as a basis for altering land management, which can ultimately help protect the fish and invertebrates living in our waterways.
Volunteers take kick-samples at one of the 5 sites in the catchment, twice a year - once in spring and once in autumn. The samples are submitted for professional analysis and results are shared with volunteers.
For more information on SmartRivers please see here and to get involved in aquatic invertebrate monitoring in the catchment, please contact Ann-Marie MacMaster by email in the first instance.
Volunteer with Cairngorms Connect
The Cairngorms National Park volunteer programme works with AngusAlive Rangers at Glen Doll on habitat and estate management such as path maintenance, fencing and invasive species control, as well as monitoring and surveying of species such as raptors.
The Mountains and The People project is the largest upland path project undertaken in the UK to date. As part of this project volunteers built upland paths to Loch Brandy and to sites in and around Glen Doll.

Volunteer with Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels
Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels has been working to ensure Red squirrels continue to have a home in Scotland since 2009 and in many of the project areas, Red squirrel populations are making a recovery.
Volunteers make a valuable contribution to securing the future for Red squirrels in Scotland by monitoring Red and Grey squirrel populations, conducting food abundance surveys, managing the spread of Grey squirrels in strategic areas and helping with administrative tasks.
Further information can be found here.
Volunteer with Scottish Invasive Species Initiative
The Scottish Invasive Species Initiative is a partnership project tackling invasive non-native species (INNS) alongside rivers and watercourses across northern Scotland. Scottish Invasive Species Initiative works with local partners, land managers and volunteers to control INNS for the benefit of native wildlife and communities.
There are a variety of ways in which you can get involved, including helping to control Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam, Giant hogweed and American mink.
