The lower reaches of the Rottal Burn had flowed through a straightened, embankment-lined channel since the 1830s. This section of the burn was restored to an open, meandering channel.
These works aimed to restore natural river processes, provide increased and more varied in-stream and riparian habitat that Atlantic salmon and Freshwater pearl mussel would benefit from. Furthermore, the project contributes to local and global outcomes, such as climate change adaptation and carbon storage, and it provides natural flood management benefits for communities and landowners downstream.
This project was awarded the UK River Prize by the River Restoration Centre in April 2023.
