Montrose cycle path was the first place in Angus to be managed with an urban wildlife friendly approach. Annual verge cuttings along a 2 km stretch were reduced to allow wildflowers in the seedbank to regenerate. The Curlie and Borrowfield ponds also benefitted from habitat enhancements including increasing riparian vegetation, wetland planting, installation of amphibian ladders and wildlife access ramps. There has since been a marked increase in birdlife at both ponds. Following the success in Montrose, this approach will be rolled out across other Angus towns and burghs.
