An area covering 1.8 ha of transition saltmarsh habitat, known as ‘the saltpans’, at Montrose Basin Local Nature Reserve, was restored in 2022 through the Nature Restoration Fund. Man-made pools, historically used in salt production, had become choked with rushes and the marsh had begun to dry out.
The pools were carefully re-excavated, following the outline of the original saltpans, to restore areas of open water. The saltmarsh now supports a variety of wetland species including specialist salt tolerant plants and a range of wetland birds.
