The South Esk flows through the Angus towns of Brechin (population 7199) and Montrose (population 10, 845). However, most of the area is within rural Angus, which is sparsely populated with a number of villages along its length.
The catchment faces growing pressures for new housing developments as the two main towns Brechin and Montrose expand and also from the development of new single houses and farm conversions in the countryside which need facilities to remove sewage.
